Advances in the screencaps..They are now COMPLETE!

Working with my friend down here in Houston this weekend, we have made some progress. The first fruits of our efforts are now readily available. You will find in the screencap section, all the appropriate screencaps to "Graduation", parts 1 and 2. These are good, large sized JPEGs which are clear cut and sharp at fairly good size. Note the halfway transparent watermark GJA shield in the lower right hand corner. Now that we have worked out the format, I hope to have all the screencaps done in this manner to replace seasons one through three over the next week or so (if my time is not too overtaken by my job.) It will take me a little longer to get Season four worked in because of the way I have to obtain the images. These images seem to work out at the same size of the old ARA ones, but they will be available. I hope to have larger ones up in their place though in time.

This way I can actually replace all of the old ARA images that were there before with better ones I think.

Tomorrow, we wil tackle the Fan Art and Fan Fiction sections and get them ready for easy upload and display of both, as well as some other improvements.

Let me know how you like the new screencaps.

    Cool!

By random, I decided to check out "Downhill." The pictures seem to be all out of order.

    EDIT: You've got the <<Last image<< and >>Next Image>> buttons working! Yay!

There still a little work on the order of the old ARA screencaps, but I'll get to it. One good advantage about these new screencaps over the old ARA ones is that the old ARA screencaps were done at a 720 by 480 pixel size at the lowest resolution. The size of each of those JPEG's are around 20 Kb each roughly. This was to conserve space as I'm sure EP was restricted to about 1 or 2 Gb of space for the ARA database, without having to pay for more space to store the images.

Fortunately, I have no such restriction. I can use up to about 25 Gb without a problem. And even if the forum grows beyond that, I have plans to get my own dedicated server just for this forum. I don't have to do it right now, but it's being thought about for the future.

What that means is I have taken the new screencaps and saved them, still at 720x480 pixel size (NTSC or SD quality), but at the highest resolution possible, which yields JPEG's that are about 160 to 200 Kb each. That's a lot more detail and sharpness in each picture.

the screen caps on my site are about 50kb each, and i have now 115,000 images, and have used 6600 mb. though, the HD images average about 100kb each, then again, they are huge ;D

you do not have to worry about running out of space, 25 gig is PLENTY

the software i use allows the images to be saved in a very small size, and max quality. let me know if you want to use it. it does
    1. file type conversion
    2. resize
    3. crop
    4. color adjustments
    5. rotation
    6. Text
    7. watermark
    and more

    and it is free

before i wrote my automated screen cap system, i used this software

    Thanks, WallaceB! Very much appreciated.

Since I already have the software, I do have a system worked out though. I rip the eps from their MPEG's into avi format, run them through Pinnacle to clean things up (get rid of ads, etc.) then run them through Aftereffects to resize, adjust, and then render the screencaps, and the watermark is worked in then too.

Of course, I'd like to get my hands on some of those Australian eps myself. (Ha Ha)! However, if I somehow managed that, I'm committed then to getting my my own server.

EDIT: It's going to take me a little longer than I expected to do all this. I expect now to get all of Season One's Screencaps up by the end of the week. I'll try to finish getting Seaons Two and Three up by the end of the month, along with the movies. Then I'll get Season four up in the first part of November.

wow, that is way way way way more work than i do. i take the screen caps from the raw MPEG video, it gives the best output that way.

and i can..... help you with the HD eps :whistle:

But you have already written your own software to do that, right? I'm sure that streamlines the process quite a bit. My problem fo course is that I'm going to lose a little bit of quality in ripping the MPEG down to avi, though it really isn't noticeable. Once I do that, I could go straight to Aftereffects and pull out the caps with watermark, and that's all I have to do. It's really very easy and quick. I onyl go to Pipnnacle as well to render the avi.I considered using a keystroke repetition program in association with my Power DVD player to rip large size caps too, although that is a little cumbersome. But of course these come straight off the recordings I made, including the old ones I got on tape a year ago or so, and convert as I need them.

I really do appreciate the offer of the HD eps, but I'll have to hold off of that. For one thing I would definitely have to get my own server before I start hosting those kinds of images.:P

    Thanks, WallaceB,

I am considering when to make that move, although it will a little farther into the future if and when I do.
