College Question
I was reading a few articles in the New York Times Magazine today about college, which got me thinking. I know this is an odd question, but when you ask teachers to write recommendations, do you ask only the teachers you have for that year in any given subject, or can you also ask a teacher (teachers) you may have had that know you well (and that you might have worked with through some other school activity)?

I would think you could ask teachers from previous school years... I don't think it matters if there your current teacher or not... as long as they were your teacher at one point.

And make sure they didn't hate you....
That would be so horrible...
But you can ask any teacher... I went through this just recently anyway.

That made me laugh so hard....
Thanks, guy, for the answers. I was curious, because for certain subjects I may want more than one recommendation letters but there's only one teacher per subject per year, so the above answers are reassuring.

It depends on the college, I think. They usually also ask for teachers from a specific subject.

Some colleges require reference letters, others do not, the easiest way to find out would be to check their web page and look under admissions. Some schools may also require an applicant to write an essay explaining why they want to attend.
It doesn't really matter if the teacher supervised a particular subject, coached a sport or was the advisor for an extracurricular activity. In fact I would seek letters from at least one instructor from an extracurricular, since it shows that you did more than the bare minimum to get through. It shouldn't bother the teachers to provide such letters, they've all been there themselves and in the day of word processors it's pretty easy to maintain a template on file.
Good luck

Thanks.
Easy for some, anyway. I've seen some teachers who cannot work a computer...
