Nerd for Homecoming 2007

Next thing we knew, all twenty of us had the fifty signatures required to be nominated.
So today, all of the Homecoming candidates had to go to the gym during study hall for a meeting. Seeing that half the people attending were nerdy white boys was just golden.
Nomination just isn't enough for us, though. We're actually going for the win, so each of us has decided to throw our full weight behind one candidate, the nerdiest among us. The campaign is actually looking good so far—enough people may go for the novelty of voting for a nerd for Homecoming that we may actually have a good chance.
In case anyone cares, here's a thread about it, and there's a Myspace group about it, too (with pictures!). I'm not sure how well the campaign is going. We have a lot of support, but at the same time there's a lot of people saying "no way in heck is he winning." We're pretty sure our candidate got past the preliminary election, and Homecoming Week is next week.
We taped up a giant poster board on the gym building that read, "Sign your name here to pledge your vote to John Kesler." At the end of the day, there were quite a few signatures, including one in very large print that read "John Hancock."

I heard a rumor that Leadership might fix the election to make sure our candidate doesn't win (perhaps because the candidates for princess complained), but it's just a rumor. Could be completely false and we won't really ever know.
Some of our posters are getting abused and torn down, but that's actually kind of encouraging, in a weird way; if we didn't have a chance, why would they bother? :P

Hmm, possibly because they're just jerks? I seem to remember a great many people going to a great deal of trouble to act like total s**ts when I was in high school.

Aw, but my interpretation is so much better!

Perhaps you're both right. The Nerd candidate might have gained enough popular support that the jerks are driven to vandalize the posters. Such an "underdog" is a natural target for their intolerance and hatred - a sad historical fact proven time and again down through the years.

There's irony here: the same people who shun are nw concerned about the power of the ones they shun.

Power to the people! Down with the elitist scum!
I certainly hope there's a good showing for your candidate.

Elections were today. Apparently each class gets a separate prince/princess pair. One of the kids we nominated was a freshman, and he was the only prince candidate for that class, so he's already won. It should be interesting because the rest of the freshman class hates him (not because he's a nerd, but because he's antisocial and kind of a jerk to people who aren't his friends).
We think Kesler has a good chance of winning. I didn't take very much time to look at the ballot—only enough to highlight Kesler's name and a random other name under the Princess category—but according to my friends, no "normal" boys were actually running. That means that the opposition is going to have to choose between a bunch of other (less flamboyant) nerds. There are so many choices that the only possible result from such a disorganized opposition is a split vote—which means a nerd party victory.
The Homecoming king/queen election is Friday, and apparently the entire school can vote in that. Some of the seniors are pushing their own nerd candidate. Can you guess who I'm voting for.
