    Two strong women

    jereddian:

here's a small initial draft of what we discussed on the 'What are you reading?" thread. Nothing like a couple of quiet, reserved women in a very surprising 'sitch": This is part of an upcoming story: Birth, and Rebirth 04: Who Gives This Woman…a Pain?

    -----
Kimberly Ann Possible-Stoppable was propped up in their bed, enjoying her court-ordered rest time (‘Well, it might as well have been court-ordered, anyway,’ she thought; ‘my doctor ordered a minimum of 18 hours of bed rest daily and threatened to put me in the hospital if I didn’t follow her instructions’) and enjoyed something she had never taken time to do, recreationally: reading.

She had collected the David Weber Honor Harrington series of books, convinced, by reading the back cover of one paperback that she needed to read about this amazing woman. She purchased all the books but had never sat and read any of them, being content to pack them and move them with her to college, her apartment, then their apartment, then their first leased house, and now their first home. Now, with the doctor’s restrictions, she had the time to read.

Since ‘she could do anything,’ she had read the first six books in 10 days, enjoying every moment of the time she spent with Honor. She cried when Paul died, she cheered when Honor saved Grayson, and she laughed at Nimitz. The one thing that bothered her was the first description of Nimitz that she read: it reminded her, vaguely, of a dream she’d had when she was much, much younger: she was chasing a six-legged creature that looked like a cat, and he was laughing at her the entire time she tried to catch up with him.

She understood why Honor had placed her child in a replication tube, and she also understood that, given the choice, she would have carried her own child: Honor, like Kim, was a woman who would and could do anything.

She closed her book reluctantly, leaned over and kissed her husband (Ron was working on new menu items for Booyah’s), and lay flat on her back, her Tweebs giving her no choice as to sleeping positions. She was almost instantaneously asleep.

    -----

Lady Dame Honor Stephanie Harrington, Duchess of Harrington, Steadholder Harrington, Fleet Admiral, Grayson Space Navy, Admiral of the Red and Commander of RMN Eighth Fleet, Commander of the Protector's Own and Captain of HMS Unconquered (HH11), laughed silently to herself as she entered her cabin.

She and Mike had just spent three hours watching, of all things, her favorite distraction: Old Earth Animations, or, as Mike called the holos, cartoons.
Mike’s ancestors had brought them from Earth when they emigrated and converted them as technology advanced and storage/replay capabilities leaped beyond the previous generation’s technological feats.

Mike’s favorites were Honor’s, as well: the teenage girl who saved the world: Kim Possible. How the writers had come up with some of their ideas, Honor had wondered, but much of what she saw, she had to agree with Mike, was the material that girls of that time would take to almost instantaneously.
Mike had hooked her on these when they were at Sanganami Island, and they had spent one entire weekend watching all of the shows in order and all six movies that followed the shows, following Kim and Ron, her husband, into their future, with kids and everything.

Honor relaxed as Andrew LaFolett, Honor’s chief personal armsman, left the room and James MacGuiness, her personal steward, followed as he deposited a plate of Miranda’s chocolate chip cookies that had been sent to her ‘for those unforeseen eating needs,’ Miranda has said in her note, laughing the entire time because she knew Honor’s metabolism.

The only thing that had bothered Honor was that there had been a five-microsecond light burst in the first show that she had never seen before; of course, Mike didn’t see it. “Perhaps a degradation of the capture algorithm,” she said as she changed out of her daysuit and into sleeping clothes.

The thing that she remembered the most was that Ron’s smile reminded her of Paul’s; perhaps that was one of the reasons that she enjoyed the shows so much: they reminded her of Paul, a simpler time.

Nimitz looked at her with a quizzical grin, then let out a self-serving “BLEEP” and moved over to her perch.

“Same to you, Stinker,” she laughed, and she climbed into bed and was almost instantaneously asleep.

    -----

“Who are you?” Honor heard a vaguely familiar voice, and moved.

But, she couldn’t move: it was as if she were in heavy gravity.

She opened her eyes and gasped: her stomach was HUGE!

She turned in the direction of the voice, and she was certain she was dreaming or crazy:

Either Paul had come back to life, or she was in bed with a person she had last seen as an animated character named Ronald Stoppable.

“Wade, I need a scan, stat!” Ron held a device and pointed it at here, and Honor heard a familiar voice:

“Well, I can tell you one thing: she’s definitely not Kim,” the male voice replied, and Honor grabbed the wrist Kimmunicator from Ron’s hand and turned it to face her.

    “Hello, Wade,” and Wade gasped.

“Admiral!” he almost shouted and jumped from his chair, knocking nit over as he saluted.

Ron knew his wife’s voice, and that wasn’t it.

    -----

“Just, who the hell are you?” Kim heard a vaguely familiar voice, and moved.

She could move, and that worried her.

She opened her eyes, and she was staring at four frowning individuals, one with claws extended and one gentleman pointing the business end of a pulsar at her.

“Excuse me?” she replied, and she realized that her voice was the same.

“I asked, just who the hell are you?” Kim looked at the African-American woman and smiled.

“Monique, if this is a joke, it’s a good one,” Kim replied, and the woman snorted. “It’s me: Kim.”

“I don't know you, 'Kim,' but two things are wrong:

“One: You're on my commanding officer's ship without authorization, so you don't being here; and

    “and

“Two: My name's not Monique, it's Michelle Henke: Admiral Michelle Henke, to be precise.”

“Mike: what’s the sitch?” and Mike Henke gasped. She knew who she was facing.

ready for some fun, jeriddian and any Honor fans out there?

..............................................Thy mother mated with a Scorpion!....

I can only imagine where you are taking this one, nebster. Of course, I like the idea you having Kim carrying her own tweebs, like her firstborns in my story.

Very interesting start, I must say. Now we'll have to see if you can beat MrDrP at his own game.

Booyah's? Oh, well, that's okay. I could still fit it in my Resolution Universe.:P

It will be intersting to see where you go with it. And I've almost figured out how to adapt "Resolution" to Season Four now. I still have to finish the "Magi" story first.

Well done, good sir, well done.

What is this with y'all and scorpions?

Kim wants to follow her mother, but she's beginning to have second thoughts about natural childbirth...

Beating MrDrP? no intention of trying, jeriddian, only besting myself: that's my own personal marker.

Regarding the restaurant: Booyah's is the first of Ron's restaurants, specializing in a multicultural meal and several cheese-emphasized desserts, in honor of his friend Rufus.

I'm glad you like it, jeriddian; there's much more to come with this, and you already know what will happen at the end of the story if you've read BaR 05...or, do you? evil

You know, this afternoon at work I was thinking about Honor Harrington, when I spotted an invoice going out to one of our customers. It was addressed to - now get this - Harrington Regional Medical in Texas!
Now how's that for a coincidence?

If I am not mistaken, I believe that is located in Abilene. Am I right?

close, jeriddian: you got the first letter correct:

Harrington Regional Medical is located in Amarillo, north of Abilene in the Texas Panhandle (for those of you not familiar with God's country ) http://www.medcenter.org/

...then, a thought: Honor's father is a doctor: wonder if these founders of the hospital are some deep ancestors....NAAAAH, just must be a coincidence, right? Right?

I stand corrected. However, I should also point out that Honor's mother is the doctor. Her father is a scientist, I believe.

Sorry, j, but you flipped them: Dr. Alfred H. is the neurosurgeon (gee, sounds familiar), and Dr. Allison H. is the geneticist. I wonder, now, if Bob and Mark had good reading material....
