Beef recall: 134 million pounds
The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a Southern California slaughterhouse that is being investigated for mistreating cattle.
Officials said this is the largest recall in the United States, surpassing a 1999 recall of 35 million pounds [...] The amount of beef -- 143 million pounds -- is roughly enough for two hamburgers for each man, woman and child in the United States. [...] recall will affect beef products dating to February 1, 2006 -- cnn.com
What caught my eye is that this recall is for beef dating to two years ago!?
And from the same article:
Raymond [USDA Undersecretary for food safety] countered a claim leveled by Humane Society President and CEO Wayne Pacelle, who said a USDA inspector was at the Westland plant for about two hours each day. USDA inspectors are there at slaughterhouses "continuously," Raymond said.
Eh? I think that makes it even worse for the USDA - if an USDA inspector is on site "continuously", why wasn't this problem identified earlier?
Why is everyone who drives slower than me an idiot, and everyone who drives faster a maniac?
