You know, normally I'm wary of the people shouting DOOOOOM, but even I think that Disney might of jumped the gun a little going for a full blown "Next big star wars movie!". Personally, they'd of been better off with something smaller, something that's expendable if they foul it up but something that the fans would grow to. Like, a Rogue Squadron movie. Not supposed to be the squadron's whole story, just one tale of Rogue Squadron. Something that establishes them as more than just the squadron at Hoth, yet also includes some fan favorites without being a complete fandom love letter. *shrugs*

I'm cautiously optimistic at this point.

Personally, they'd of been better off with something smaller, something that's expendable if they foul it up but something that the fans would grow to. Like, a Rogue Squadron movie. I agree with you, Luke. Every now and then, in an established universe like Star Wars, it helps to step away from the main characters and do a story featuring folks we've never met before. Diane Carey did so in two of her Star Trek novels, Dreadnought! and Battle Stations! Both books featured a group of four friends, all junior officers, on the starship Enterprise and told the story from their point of view - they were the protagonists, not Kirk, Spock, et al. The outcome of each book depended on what those four characters did, with Kirk and Co. acting in a supporting role. I found those two books to be very well-written, as well as a refreshing change of pace in that they involved new, original characters instead of the ones we're already familiar with.
I remember reading somewhere that Lucasfilm had, at one time, considered doing a live-action Star Wars anthology series set during the Galactic Civil War - in other words, taking place at the same time as the Episode IV-V-VI trilogy. It would tell a different story each week, featuring original characters in different settings. Unfortunately, that series never got out of the planning stage. Lucasfilm instead concentrated on their animated Clone Wars show.
Well, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. I heard that George Lucas himself is conferring with J.J. Abrams about the script for the new film - hopefully to keep the story firmly set in the continuity Lucasfilm has already established with their "Expanded Universe" philosophy (all the books, comics, graphic novels, games, etc. mesh together without conflicting with each other or the films). I really can't see Lucas letting Mr. Abrams completely "reboot" Star Wars the way he did with his two Star Trek films. And I don't think the fans would let him, either.

What I'd like to see is a version featuring every fan fic Mary Sue ever written, but none of the established canon characters. Writing it exclusively in Elizabethan English, with period useage would really be cool. Avast Vader, Thou infectious earth-vexing leprous witch!

Yeah, there are sooooooo many levels of wrong with this picture. As for Disney owning Lucas films now... God only knows how this will turn out. We'll just have to wait and see.

Actually, it hasn't been too bad so far. In fact, they're premiering a new CG-animated series on Disney XD next month titled Star Wars: Rebels. Judging by the preview shorts they've been running on both DC and D-XD, it looks pretty good. I might just be tuning in on a regular basis, depending on when it's scheduled (other shows on other channels take priority, like Sleepy Hollow and Marvel's Agents Of SHIELD).

I know it's been a long while since anyone posted this thread, but it seems appropriate to post on it now. It has been a crazy two days. Carrie Fisher dies on 12/27 of what appears to be a sudden, massive heart attack she suffered during an eleven hour plane trip from London a few days earlier, only to be followed by her mother Debbie Reynolds who suffered a stroke and dying the following day 12/28. Carrie dying at a relatively young age (younger than me at least) was something I thought was possible. She has not looked good for some time, at least to me, and she did live a pretty rough life that was hard on her body. Her mother following her only a day later clearly proves that losing a child is the worst thing a parent can experience. God bless them both.

I can only imagine what Carrie's daughter, Billie Lourd is going through right now..........
