Well, I had to go back and see the film again. This makes the eighth time I have seen it in a theatre, this time, with the extended footage. There are an additional nine minutes of footage, and I have to say that to me it definitely makes a significant difference to the film. You do not see any additional footage until well into the film......

Spoilers ahead: DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE SEEING THE MOVIE YOURSELF.

1) The first added footage occurs when Jake first goes out with Grace and Norm on the one-six with Trudi as a door gunner. This is the beautiful scene of Trudi's scorpion flying through the Pandora landscape with the waterfalls and the flying ikran-like creatures (They are smaller than ikran and purple.) Injected in there just before they fly over the waterfalls is a scene where the scorpion flies over some herd like beasts drinking at a water hole. These beasts are sort of rhinocerous-like and huge. They seem to function like buffalo where the Na'vi are concerned, later on. This extra scene is about 30 seconds.

2) After they land the scorpion, Grace, Norm, and Jake start walking out into the jungle. Just after they leave the scorpion and walk into the jungle, there is a new scene where the three of them go to Grace's old school where she had taught the Na'vi. It is now abandoned. Grace goes there to recover some old equipment that had been abandoned there. Jake asks why the school was no longer operating. Grace replies the Omaticayan stopped coming because they had learned everything they needed to know about the sky people. As Grace and Norm gather up some equipment, Jake notices there some bullet holes in a wall. He asks what happened. Grace answers, "Are you going to help with this equipment?". This is about a minute or a little more.

3) The next additional scene comes after Moat has instructed Neytiri to instruct Jake on the ways of the people . Jake's clothing has been taken away and he is now dressed like them. She takes Jake to the communal meeting of the people where they are eating together. The additional scene comes in an exchange between Neytiri and Jake where he asks her name. She answers him, and he says "Nice to meet you". This is about 30 seconds.

4) The next scene is when Jake has finally earned the right to seek his own Ikran and he is in the group of candidates travelling up into the Hallelujah mountains for this rite of passage. There is the scene in there when they are all travelling across the thick vines like a rope bridge between two of the floating mountains. Injected in thereis a scene where Neytiri flies over and under the group calling out in her war cry. Jake acknowledges her. This is about fifteen seconds.

5) The scene where Jake struggles and fights with his Ikran is a little extended by a few seconds.

6) The flight scenes with Neytiri on his first flight where they fly out together also is slightly extended with a few more scenes, which gives it several more seconds.

7) The next major extension is a new scene where those buffalo-like creatures which were first seen in teh first new scene are being driven and hunted in a herd just like buffalo were herede and hunted by American Indiands. The Na'vi are hunting them on Ikran and Horse. Jake is participating in the hunt and brings down a major huge specimen on his own with bow and arrow. The scene that follwos is the one where he is saying "I was a stone cold aerial hunter".

8) The next scene is the so called love making scene when Jake and Neytiri are at the Tree of Prayers. Actually, the only thing that was added was a scene in the middle where they sit down and they take their hair braids and create "saheylu" (the bond) between themselves.

9) The next major scene comes when the corporation has already bulldozed the Tree of Prayers area. After Jake and Neytiri have returned, and the plug is pulled, so to speak. There is an additional scene showing where the Na'vi have retailiated against the machines in a night raid, killing six troopers and destroying the bulldozers that were there. This was when Selfridge decided to "pull the trigger".

10) The major scene is important. This is during the final battle when Jake is leading the Na'vi into battle against Quaritch. when Tsutey attacks the shuttle, he ends up getting shot and falls down to the ground. what is added is a ten second scene where it shows him falling to the ground, using the forest to break his fall. He is mortally injured, but still alive.

11) The last major scene is important too. it's about two minutes. After the battle is over, and Neytiri has rescued Jake's human form after killing Quaritch, there is a scene where Jake, back in his Avatar body, with Neytiri and the others are running across the jungle to where Tsutey lays dying. Tsutey asks Jake if the people are safe. Jake tells him they are. Tsutey says that he can no longer lead the people, that Jake must take over as Olo'eyktan. Jake says that he is not "officer material". Tsutey rebuffs him ands says it is decided, and that Jake must send him to Eywa. He takes out Jakes own knife and puts it in Jake's hand. Jake says he will not kill him. Tsutey replies, that this is the way it was always done in these circumstances. He says he does not mind going to Eywa for he has proudly fought beside Toruk-Makto and succesfully beat a powerful enemy. He has no regrets and calls Jake his brother. He asks Jake to let him suffer no more and send him on his way. Naytiri is there also, silently crying. Jake complies and slides the knife into his heart and says the holy words over him.

Anyway, quite a bit of these makes much better sense of some of the original scenes. It was only 9 more minutes in a 160 minute film, but it sure made it flow smoother in my mind.

Does your post spoil anything if one has seen the movie, oh, 6 to 7 times?

Or is better to keep some of the new parts a surprise? I haven't seen the extended edition yet, and I plan to soon with a friend. (Though I have to drive 45 minutes up to Roanoke to see it; the main theater in town has 3D, but it's not showing Avatar. )

Don't worry. There were probably some getting nice and irradiated around Hells Gate's reactor core. We'll probably see them in the five-hour-long "We-found-this-stuffed-in-a-corner-somewhere-and-decided-to-put-it-in" Director's Cut. :P

That's comforting, especially when I think of all the movies ruined by a paucity of giant radioactive insects such as Love Story, Wall Street, Sleepless in Seattle and just about every Woody Allen film since about 1985. I imagine Showgirls would have been Oscar worthy if they had just had the forethought to have included GRA and James Whitmore with a flamethrower.

I think I stumbled across that movie a few years back while channel surfing on a cousin's 1,000-channel, 60"+ widescreen TV....

Bouncing between the two channels during their respective commercial breaks made for an..... odd viewing experience.

I imagine Showgirls would have been Oscar worthy if they had just had the forethought to have included GRA and James Whitmore with a flamethrower.

Not to mention Hannah Montana Forever.
