I think I stumbled across that movie a few years back while channel surfing on a cousin's 1,000-channel, 60"+ widescreen TV....

Bouncing between the two channels during their respective commercial breaks made for an..... odd viewing experience.
Ah, Elizabeth Berkley ... what would Mr. Belding have thought of her performance in that flick?

I found this very good review of "Avatar" yesterday while surfing the 'Net:
Avatar — The Best Damn Implausible Persecuted-Blue-People Action I’ve Seen in Ages!
I disagree with him about the Amp Knife - it seemed silly until I realized that in a dense jungle environment, a machete would be quite useful. Other than that, his likes and dislikes are pretty spot on. Amazing visuals, jaw-dropping "world depth," (they came up with propeller pitch rates?!), underwhelming story execution.
Watching the teaser and main trailer again, I think that's the thing I was most disappointed about in the move. Underwhelming story execution. Basically, I watched the big operatic trailer and thought, "Eh. Looks OK."
Then I saw the near-wordless teaser, and the pathos it was able to portray through Jake's slow, spreading grin beside the AVTR tank, or Neytiri's eye-twitches, and immediately reconsidered the movie. Maybe this wasn't going to be the formulaic "Pocahontas" ripoff I thought it might be. Maybe this has some smarts it's not letting on. They had to boil the trailer down to the basics, right?
Another viewing of the trailer seemed to back that up. For all the horrible, groan-inducing bits at 1:03-1:10 (timing off the first clip in the linked article), and 2:07-2:15 (Neytiri looks like a goldfish!), there's the RDA men's offer at 0:20; Jake's lament at 0:35; the "legs" offer at 1:30; that "Whoa" at 1:47; Jake's "Outstanding" at 2:24; Quarich's question at 2:33; "Everything changed" at 2:42; Trudy's small, tense smile at 2:55; and Grace's pensive look at 3:18. They all seemed to hint at inner conflicts and smarts - a deeper story - that wasn't obvious at first glace.
From the cutting of the trailer, I'd thought that Jake remained a mole and a traitor far longer (at least through "Outstanding!") than he turned out to be, and that his switch from one side to the other was to be a pretty hard decision.
Because I'd gotten my fanboy hype up, I was pretty disappointed when the movie featured in the trailer turned out to be.... exactly what the trailer said it was going to be.
I felt a sharp ping of dismay when the voiceovers started up in the beginning... However I'd imagined the movie starting up, voiceovers were not included. They seemed to smash the cardinal rule of "show, don't tell."
That said, the sound and look of the very first fade-up-from-black was awesome. First the otherworldly wail filtered in from afar over the FOX logo, then the drums pounded up, and then we dropped down into the misty canopy - and you knew you just got on one hellava ride.
Carpe Navi: Because you never know when you'll get to go boating at government expense again.

Apparently the next installment will be underwater. I have this mental image of the Smurfs in the Yellow Submarine meet Operation Petticoat.....

Thus absolutely classic:
http://www.the-editing-room.com/avatar.html, the language gets rough, but I almost did a spit take reading it. They do lots of other movies, as well.
