"Chatfield, there seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today."

Admiral Sir David Beatty, in reaction to the destruction of battlecruisers at the Battle of Jutland (May 31 - 1 June, 1916), the largest general action ever fought between dreadnought capital ships (next biggest was at Surigao Straight, in 1945).
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto - “You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind each blade of grass.”

The British Admiralty also suffered from a dreadful lack of appreciation the German Submarines, specifically the Type 31 U-boats, which did some significant damage to British ships. The Naval High Command was so contemptuous of the German U-Boats that their answer for combating them was to have sailors row out into the bay in rubber dinghies with mallets and whenever a submarine was spotted, they were to simply row over to wherever the periscopes came up and then bash them in. They changed their tune quickly later in the war when their convoy ships suffered greatly without escorts to guard them.

Re: Post A Quote - Fall 2012 Edition

Part of the problem was that at sea, as on land, technology outstripped a lot of the tactical thought. Submarines are an excellent example: while compared to the WWII uboats (not to even mention the US Fleet classes of submarines) the WWI variants were slow, short ranged and had very limited submerged times and depth capabilities, they managed a pretty good record (British subs got their licks in, too). Things like centralized fire control and gun laying computers had just been introduced, previously each mount and turret was aimed locally, pretty much the same method employed by sailing ships for centuries. Adm Dreyer RN and Adm Sims USN, shepherded the introduction of the Pollen (UK) and Ford (US) fire control computers around the beginning of the war, which allowed coordinated, harmonized shooting. There's a lot more, including ASW, amphibious assault, carrier aviation and even cruise missiles that were first tried in WWI, but that is probably best pursued in General Discussion.

Meanwhile a quote for the Battle of Midway (these are oddly hard to find this one is from the WWII memorial in DC)

"BATTLE OF MIDWAY JUNE 4-7, 1942
THEY HAD NO RIGHT TO WIN. YET THEY DID, AND IN DOING SO THEY CHANGED
THE COURSE OF A WAR…EVEN AGAINST THE GREATEST OF ODDS, THERE IS
SOMETHING IN THE HUMAN SPIRIT – A MAGIC BLEND OF SKILL, FAITH AND
VALOR – THAT CAN LIFT MEN FROM CERTAIN DEFEAT TO INCREDIBLE VICTORY. "

“I am not here as a serf or vassal. I am not begging my lords for mercy. I’m a born free American woman, wife, mother, and citizen. And I’m telling my government that you’ve forgotten your place. It’s not your responsibility to look out for my well-being and to monitor my speech. It’s not your right to assert an agenda. Your post, the post that you occupy, exists to preserve American liberty. You’ve sworn to perform that duty. And you have faltered.”

"The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."
    - Captain Montgomery Scott, Star Trek III: The Search For Spock

Certainly an apropos sentiment, given some procedural changes at work, though the stopping up of the drain is going to come from all the end-users who won't have a freaking clue (despite the broadcast announcement e-mails).

Yeah, there's always somebody who doesn't get the memo or read the e-mail....

"Man, it must suck to be a paladin looking for a lawyer. I mean, aren't they all Evil or something? They'd end up smiting each one they met!"
    - a one liner I came up with on this thread in regards to Paladins from D&D. Figured I might as well share it

That's a good one. The problem with lawyers is they are restricted to acting within their ethics even at times against their morals.
