This is a thread to talk about the darkest cartoon Disney ever released. So, what makes this seemingly innocent cartoon so dark? Well, first you have many references to suicide (like the part where the AC blows up), torture and dismemberment (the entire scene in Elmo St. Peters' shop)...and then you have the "Worthless" part...it's just sick and wrong (it features sentient cars singing their song just before being crushed. Some are crushed right on camera, and others only show car parts flying everywhere. The full force of the song's lyrics don't hit until you're much older. And possibly keep getting scarier the older one gets.)

Bottom line is, do not watch this cartoon if you're planning to throw out, destroy, replace or sell any old appliance in the near future (or even junk your car for that matter), or else you'll be sorry...bitterly sorry.

Is this particular 'toon available on home video? I've heard a lot about it down through the years, but have yet to view it. Now I'm curious to see if it's really as "dark" as hrodwulf123 says it is.

It should be...for those who can handle some spoilers, this is the Worthless* song.

* This song always reminds me of Diane, my first car (it was a Citroen Dyane), and how we sold her...but that's another story.

I guess I'll have to see the full-length cartoon to put this song in its proper context, but I just didn't feel saddened about the cars' fate while watching it. Perhaps it was the fast "rock & roll"- style tempo of the song itself. It just didn't seem appropriate for the mood they were trying to create for this scene, IMHO.
Plus, I've junked many a used car in my day without shedding a tear for most of them (they were only cheap transportation, not vehicles I really wanted or liked). That may also explain my reaction to watching this video clip.

I have watched the cartoon two times. It is containing a very interesting, but also dramatic story. But finally the story will find a happy end for the brave toaster and all old appliances.
