Agreed! And our next step should be an outpost on the moon - NOT Mars, or out in the asteroid belt.
    I agree with that, too.

I, for one, would love to spend some time on the moon - if only to say that I did it. Speaking as a former Boy Scout, I believe that would be the ultimate camp-out.

Have you ever felt a connection to a place you've never been to?

You mean like the moon? Yes, I have. Spending many a night studying that world through a telescope and binoculars has only increased my desire to go there and explore.

No, not like the Moon. I mean like some place on Earth - you've never been there, but when you see a postcard, photo or a Google street view, you feel like you've been there before.

Happens all the time. I suspect that I've been to so many places, read and seen photographs of many others and looked at maps and remote sensing of more, that everywhere feels kind of familiar.

I have the same thing happen with people.

Well, on the same day that The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, was laid to rest, we go and lose another legendary sports figure: Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe.

Question of the day: when you remove a clock from a wall where it's hung for 29 years, how long does it take for you to stop glancing at the empty spot expecting to see the time?

More than a week, for sure.

One of those funny things about being stuck at the house and the internet: One tugs at a thread and follows it to odd end points.

While looking for information on a completely unrelated topic I discovered that after being renamed O'Hare Airport, the first landing on the new runway was not planned, In 1952 the Blue Angels were transiting between air shows with a pair of dissimilar aircraft, F7U-1 Cutlasses (the only season they flew with team), one of the F7Us had a flameout (they were twin engine) and diverted to then NAS Glenview, since this resulted in a fouled deck at Glenview, another runway of sufficient length needed to be found for the remaining F7U.
LT Whitey Fleichner, the pilot, was diverted to O'Hare. Upon arrival he was told ignore the peach baskets that had covered the runway, to prevent landings, and to proceed with an emergency recovery. Pilot and plane landed successfully, the fate of the peach baskets was not mentioned.
