The Second Essay for Orchestra, by Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein leading the Berlin Symphony Orchestra.

Followed by the Goldberg Variations by J. S. Bach, Glenn Gould performing on piano. There are thirty variations of the theme which Bach wrote for Count Kaiserling, a nobleman who was often ill and had severe insomnia, who commissioned him to write music to help him sleep. When traveling, the count always brought along with him his court harpsichordist named Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, thus the name given to the composition when published in 1741. Glenn first became famous after recording the variations in the 1950's. He then had a fruitful career touring and performing as a concert pianist after that along with many recordings. He would re-record the variations again in the 1980's. He was rather eccentric as he felt the experience of a concert by him should be a solemn and philosophical experience, therefore he was quite insistent that the audience make no sound and do not applaud at the end of a performance by him, but should simply leave silently in deep contemplation of the experience at the end of a concert. Of course, he rarely ever got his wish in that respect.
