It was a happier time as far as music was concerned, I think. True, we were in the middle of the counter-culture movement, which spawned some profound changes in American Culture (not necessarily for the better in some cases IMHO), and therefore music reflected that as well with the maturing of Rock and Roll ( Which was definitely for the better), but we were not near as cynical then as we are now in this country. I think that cynicism may be the death of us eventually.

I was listening to a very good rendition of Ludwig Van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C Minor done by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Carlos Kleiber. Very, very well done. I definitely need to get that recording and keep it. I like it better than Von Karajan with the Berlin SO.

I wholeheartedly agree! Back then songs were about peace, love and fun, while today's music is all about shooting, self indulgence, and hooking up with the "risque ladies" (but there are some modern bands that are worth mentioning,like Iron Maiden for example, because most of their songs are about history, so for example their song "Brighter than a thousand Suns" is about the Trinity test.) .

This afternoon I finally unpacked and set up my new CD boombox, which replaced the one that recently died on me. The first song I played on it was We're All Alone by Boz Scaggs. Then I played a classic: Those Were The Days by Mary Hopkin.

I recently got rid of my boombox, which I hadn't used in a very long time. It had great sentimental value: it was my consolation prize from the Nintendo World Championships of 1990. If I'd won my division and taken home the car (a Geo Metro convertible, iirc) I bet that would've gone many years ago.

Ahh. Good symphony. The "miracle" for which the piece was named was when the symphony was performed in London and was so well received by the audience, they crowded around the stage to applaud Mr. Haydn and the orchestra (this was a common practice in those days). At the time they did this, the giant chandelier which lit the great hall and was suspended over the audience suddenly broke and crashed into the seats that had just been vacated by the audience. As a result, no one was killed or even injured, thus the 'miracle' of the symphony, and this was how it got its name. Further research into the event showed that this actually did happen, but it happened with Symphony No. 102, not No. 96 which has the name.

Daniel Barenboim and the East-West Divan Orchestra with Beethoven's Symphony No. 1. The East-West Divan Orchestra is an ensemble made up of young Palestinian and Israeli Musicians and is a part of the effort to try and bring Peace to the Middle East.

Ah yes, Bob Seger - a true American classic. Did you know that his 1978 song Night Moves was inspired by a screening of American Graffiti that Mr. Seger attended? The film is referenced at one point in the song's lyrics:

I woke last night to the sound of thunder;
How far off I sat and wondered;
Started hummin' a song from 1962....

I read that in an interview Mr. Seger gave a few years back, when he described how he wrote that song. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I read it just now (sorry)....
