Now rereading The Cardinal, by Henry Morton Robinson. The novel traces the career of Stephen Fermoyle, a young Roman Catholic priest who comes home to Boston in 1915 after seminary training in Rome and proceeds to rise in the church's hierarchy.

In its December 18, 1950 issue, Time magazine reported that The Cardinal was "The year's most popular book, fiction or nonfiction." It was adapted for the screen in 1963 by Otto Preminger.

The protagonist of this novel is the eponym for a Catholic high school I invented for Middleton in my fan fiction stories. (If I ever publish chapter 7, you will learn the result of the Spirit Week pigpuck contest between MHS's Mad Dogs and Cardinal Fermoyle High's Pugnacious Hibernians.)
